BADLANDS 2020 | FAQS
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
Badlands is designed from our love to gravel, self-sufficiency, bikepacking, the mountains, the deserts, the snow and the sea. We just wanted to put all together at the same event. After a few years and many km of exploration, the result is Badlands.
GRAVEL OR MTB?
The route is around 85% off-road, most of it without special technical difficulties.
A gravel bike 40mm tyres is perfect even for those paved km. A MTB may give you an extra comfort on those few technical parts.
You and your bike will be welcome anyway.
IS THERE ANY OFFICIAL ROUTE?
Badlands is a set-route event, this means you must complete the official route from the start to the finish line. If you abandon the route for any reason, you must restart the ride from where left off.
The official track will be sent to the registered riders some weeks before the start.
WHAT ABOUT THE WEATHER?
Easy, be ready for everything and don’t understimate both extremes.
Please take in consideration you’ll ride through deserts at temperatures close to 40º but also you’ll probably ride through snowfields and overnight close to 0º.
AND ABOUT THE ELEVATION GAIN?
The elevation gain is definitely an issue to be considered in Badlands.
Just after the start in Granada the route goes into Sierra Nevada, the highest mountain range in Europe after The Alps -even higher than The Pyrenees-.
After descending from Sierra Nevada to Gorafe, the route reaches again 2.000m height in Sierra de Baza, and after taking the coast in Cabo de Gata the track climbs again beyond 3.000m, giving a total elevation gain close to 15.000m in just around 700km.
IT’S EASY TO FIND WATER AND FOOD EN-ROUTE?
If you prepare the route properly you won’t have any problems to find water and food enough en-route. But remember, try to ride with enough autonomy and to fill your bottles whenever you have the chance.
HOW LONG WOULD IT TAKE?
It depends on the rider and the external conditions, but the fastest rider could need around 4 days.
ANY PRIZE FOR THE FIRST FINISHER?
Following the bikepacking events tradition, there is no prize for the fastest rider but the honour of being first.
CAN MY FAMILY OR FRIENDS CHEER ME EN-ROUTE?
Family members and friends are warmly welcome to Badlands, but they must do so only at the Start or Finish.
WHAT IF I GET LOST?
Ask local people, use your GPS device or find the route with your mobile…but don’t call home or any base-camp. This is self-sufficiency, use your own power and resources to find the right way.
WHAT IF BREAK MY BIKE?
Try to fix it by yourself. If this is not possible go to a bike shop using any kind of transport, and after the repair go back to the same point you took the transport from.
IS THERE A MINIMUM AGE TO ENTER?
Yes. You must be at least 18 before the start.
DO I NEED AN INSURANCE?
You must have valid liability, death, accident and health insurance valid during the event, covering emergency extraction and repatriation insurance.
HOW CAN I ARRIVE THERE?
You can get that info on How to arrive.
WHAT IF I DECIDE TO ABANDON?
Unfortunately these are huge events and we can’t cover the whole route. As we won’t be able to bring you back, you must do it by yourself.
CAN I BOOK ANY SERVICES BEFORE THE START?
It is prohibited to book services that you will use in Badlands before the start, this includes accommodation. Everything you need during the event can only be booked by your once it starts.
WHAT IF I CAN’T FINISH BEFORE THE OFFICIAL EVENT CLOSURE?
After the official time limit you can’t expect any official service or support, but although the event ends your ride can go on…so just relax and enjoy your route.
